NORFOLK — The Hampton Roads Workforce Council is currently recruiting businesses for their Hampton Roads Veteran’s Career Compass which is set to go live to the public on Feb. 1.

It’s an online portal that veterans can use for free to build a profile, fill out their job/work history with the military and then have the system match them up with possible employers, said Steve Cook, vice president of the Hampton Roads Workforce Council.

He said right now the portal is only open to businesses looking to be a part of the online career portal and it is completely free for them to register.

The HRVCC was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to fund the website development and its operations, Cook said.

Once the portal is live, the service will be free for veterans to use, he said.

The way the portal works is it is an online service available to veterans and transitioning military service members.

“It is a bit more involved than your usual job search sites,” Cook said.

Veterans will build their story in this program, allowing the portal to help match them up with careers and career coaches that will fit their needs, he said.

The website was built by Indtai, the same company that builds credits to career portals for veterans in community colleges, Cook said.

This online portal will be an easier way for veterans to find out what’s next for their careers without having to go into the Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center, he said.

For now, the portal is only accepting businesses who want to register but as of Feb. 1 the portal will be open to all veterans and transitioning service members.
