The Hampton Roads Workforce Council is committed to helping to prepare the emerging workforce for meaningful and successful occupations of the future. Through participation in NextGen Pathways, as well as in-school and out-of-school year-round programs designed for youth ages 14-24, participants learn workplace readiness and academic skills essential for reaching their career goals.
Upon completion of the Hampton Roads Workforce Council's youth and young adult programs, many students move on to post-secondary education and find employment through NextGen Pathways hosted recruitment events for local employers.
NEXT GEN PROGRAMS
NextGen Opportunity Fair
The NextGen Opportunity Fair provides teens and young adults with an opportunity to gain access to employment, volunteer, and post-secondary education opportunities in the region. The Fair attracts more than 300 attendees and more than 80 vendors annually— successfully connecting businesses and organizations with the emerging workforce. NextGen Regional Internship Program
The NextGen Regional Internship Program provides internship opportunities for youth and young adults in Hampton Roads. The nine-week paid internship program currently supports residents of Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Chesapeake — ages 16 to 21. Participants gain valuable experience in a variety of industries throughout the summer. To apply to the 2020 program, please click HERE.
Career Guidance Academy
The Hampton Roads Career Guidance Academy is a three-day program that shares information on in-demand careers of the future and provides educators and guidance counselors with a blueprint on how to best prepare the emerging workforce. Academy participants receive labor market information on the needs of various industries, learn the requirements for entry into careers and gain insight into cutting-edge opportunities currently available in Hampton Roads.
2020 NextGen Inspire Career Expo
TThe NextGen Inspire Career EXPO will feature hands-on opportunities for students to experience a "moment in the life" of an industry professional within either ship repair or healthcare. This free event is hosted by the Hampton Roads Workforce Council in partnership with Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads. It is sponsored by Sentara Healthcare, Tidewater Community College, the Virginia Ship Repair Association, and the City of Norfolk. The event will be held on March 25, 2020.
